**Some big changes to the rankings this month! Also, this is the first Nerd Power Ranking since Rollergirl.ca’s Canadian Rankings began to use data supplied by flattrackstats.com and it’s nice to see that the power rankings and the stat rankings now (more or less) match up.

In house league teams: on the strength of their victory at the Beast of the East, Tri-City’s Vicious Dishes take over top spot while two-time finalists the Slaughter Daughters take second spot and the pre-tournament top team, the Chicks Ahoy!, drop to third. While these rankings are heavily influenced by the Beast, other action has played into them as well. In Montreal, Les Filles du Roi defeated Les Contrabanditas in double overtime to slip ahead of them; the Smoke City Betties, on the strength of their dominant performance against the Gore-Gore Rollergirls, leap into sixth spot (those Gores suffered the biggest drop in the power rankings this month). The Venus Fly Tramps are moving on up after victories over the TKOs and more recently the Thames Fatales (another big tumbler).

Not too much has changed in terms of the Top 5 travel team rankings: In the Top 5, CN Power (currently decimated by injury to numerous top players) flips with Tri-City Thunder (who are just rounding into form right now and coming off of massive victories over Grand Raggidy and Jacksonville–to name a few). Forest City is starting to tune things up as they approach the defense of their RDAC Eastern Canadian Championship. After this, things have been altered considerably. A major shakeup to the G-sTARs roster sees them slip out of the Top 10, while the Harlots were more pushed out than anything (a recent victory over a Royal City hometeam not enough to keep the team in the Top 10). The two open spots have been filled quickly. On the strength of a single performance against Ohio’s Gang Green, the Bay Street Bruisers jump all the way to 7th on the list (which roughly correlates with Rollergirl.ca’s initial ranking of them as well–a July 7th showdown with the Brute-leggers will confirm or deny this). The other team to enter the Top 10 are Kingston’s Disloyalists who have been absolutely dominant this season against everyone they’ve played.

As usual, respectful disagreement and debate is encouraged!

**** The hometeam rankings are based not as much on how I thought teams would fare against one another as to how I thought–all things being equal–the 2012 Beast of the East bracket would play itself out. As for the hometeams who are not taking part in the Beast: Due to lack of action and unproven (sometimes changed) rosters, this one required a lot of nerdtuition and a sharp ear for the word on the track. I had to go against my nerduition with the Montreal teams as, on paper, I still had the ‘Ditas leading the way, but I am respecting the results of the season-opening round-robin.

The Eastern Canadian Travel Team rankings remained largely unchanged, though based on their excellent performance at the 2012 Quad City Chaos the Rideau Valley Vixens flipped spots with the Sexpos (last year the Montreal B Team only narrowly defeated the Vixens). While I do think the gap between the Skids and CN Power and Thunder is narrowing, there is still a way to go to catch the Montreal travel team.

In big news, rollergirl.ca will now be integrating their stats with flattrackstats.com, which is fantastic news and means that rollergirl.ca will now be able to offer accurate rankings! It will be interesting to see how the travel teams shake out (but I expect it to be 1. Skids 2. CN Power 3. Terminal City 4. Tri-City and then either Rideau Valley or Red Deer or Kootenay rounding out the top 5–although the Sexpos could mix that up as well).

****It’s challenging to make the first rankings of the year when some teams haven’t played while others have, and changes to rosters have yet to be proven one way or the other. But that doesn’t stop us from trying! These rankings are based on Nerdtuition, but also on results from the end of 2011 and some prognosticating about how new rosters will work out. I’ve put 2011 ToRD champs Chicks Ahoy! as the top ranked team because of how good they got last year as the year wore on. They turned into a steam roller by the end of 2011 and after they kicked off 2012 with a victory over an also improved Gore-Gore Rollergirls, they’ve earned the top spot in my books.

As for the travel teams; the Skids still remain the cream of the crop in Canadian roller derby, and I’ve strayed from WFTDA rankings in placing CN Power just ahead of Thunder. We’ll find out soon enough (March 31) who is right, the Nerd or WFTDA.

As usual, disagreement and debate is highly encouraged!

just an fyi- FCDG’s all star team is active, with two wins against michigan based teams so far this season. also, the thames fatales may have faltered a bit of late but they’re a better team than they’re being given credit for…i’d have them a couple notches higher on that list….
