Bala Reina became the first skater to record a perfect JQ Rating of 50. (Photography by Kevin Konnyu)

In only her second season in Toronto Roller Derby, Chicks Ahoy!’s Bala Reina capped an extraordinary breakout season by recording the first perfect JQ rating in ToRD’s six seasons. Bala led the league in every jammer stat including a record-setting 211 points (the first skater to score 200 points since ToRD contracted to four teams), and a grand slam average of 5 points per jam. She also set a record for plus/minus at 141. Add to that an impressive 62% lead percentage, and it amounts to an amazing season. The only other league leader was Kookie Doe, who tied her Chicks’ teammate with a 33% jam percentage.

Betties’ BruiseBerry Pie finished in the Top 5.

Perennial contenders Dyna Hurtcha and Candy Crossbones were only able to appear in one game this season, both missing significant time with injury. 2007 JQ leader Dust Bunny and four-time leader Bambi also missed a game due to injury, yet both still managed to finish in the Top 5. This is the fifth consecutive season that Bambi has finished in the Top 5. Dust Bunny remains the only skater to finish in the Top 5 in every single ToRD season.

Betty Bomber is the prototypical Dolls’ triple threat, and recorded yet another Top 10 JQ Rating in 2012.

There were other great stories this season as well. It was a comeback season for the second place Smoke City Betties, and these ratings reflect that. The Betties’ dismantling of the Gore-Gore Rollergirls in the season finale helped launch three jammers into the Top 10, including titmouse who finally had a season when she stayed healthy and it all came together and scored 130 points on her way to finishing an impressive second overall. BruisBerry Pie snuck into the Top 5 as well on the strength of consistent numbers and a 3.7 points-per-jam average (third in the league).

Two rookies announced themselves as skaters to watch this season as well. Death Track Doll jammer Bellefast had a consistent season that saw her in the Top 10 from day one, while Betties rookie Slaptrick Swayze started slow before surging in the end to climb all the way to sixth overall, finishing second in lead percentage (57%) and averaging 3.5 points per jam. Finally, two Dolls’ triple threats Betty Bomber and Panty Hoser round out the Top 10 (eighth and ninth respectively). The Dolls continue to produce solid double/triple threats, and this season had five skaters with at least 10 jams with the star and 20 in the pack.
